journal #24

encryption: In my sociology book as i was reading i came across an unfamiliar word. i wasn't sure on what it meant so i researched it and it meant convert (information or data) into a cipher or code, esp. to prevent unauthorized access. It related to the text by converting voice for telephone calls to prevent wiretappers from understanding what people are saying. it relates to life for many reasons, one being for computers. You can convert music or word documents that you need.

slums: Today I came across an unfamiliar word as I was reading. I thought it meant a place where you don't have a home, people who are homeless. To make sure I checked on what it meant, turns out i was somewhat right. The definition was a squalid and overcrowded urban street or distinct inhabited by very poor people. It related to the text by if it weren't for people who were raised like slums, people wouldn't have made valuable contributions. It relates to life by poor people living in streets and not having anywhere to live.

overarching: The word, overarching, I came across when I was reading my Sociology book. I thought it meant doing something more than what your supposed to. As I researched the word, it meant forming an arch over something. It relates to the text by having to over arch the historical events that accumulated the capital. It can relate to life by anything that deals with an arch.

accumulation: Accumulation is a word I came across as I was reading the other day. I was confused about what it meant and as I researched the word I learned that it meant the acquisition or gradual gathering of something. It related to the text by the capital and power of struggle between workers and capitalists gather. In life, it relates to an object that is bought or something that you gather which is part of what you may own.

arbitrary: Arbitrary was an unfamiliar word I came across as I was reading my Sociology book. At first I thought it meant rare; small amount, but when I researched the definition it meant based on random choice or person whim, rather than any reason or system; one that is unusual or unexplained. It relates to the text by not knowing why there are so many different races in our world. It relates to life by not being able to explain why things happen.

lenient: I had difficulty trying to understand what lenient meant. I didn't know what it meant at first but when I researched the definition I learned that it meant (of punishment or a person in authority) permissive, merciful, or tolerant. It relates to the text by judges being more tolerant towards people who have killed. In life, it relates by a person who is in charge deciding for someone's actions that they have tolerated.

encumbered: When I was reading my sociology text book I came across the word encumbered that I was unfamiliar with. When I read the text I thought it meant a feeling of pain or distress. What it really meant was restrict or burden (someone or something) in such a way that free action or movement is difficult. It relates to the book by woman being in pain carrying a child when they are pregnant. It relates to life by having feeling of something that we can not control at times.

ingenuity: I came across the word ingenuity as I was reading today. I thought it meant what your thoughts are about a situation but as I researched ingenuity it means the quality of being clever, original, and inventive. It related to the text by the doctor making a clever decision by not doubling the mothers act. It relates to life by putting ideas together to get across the idea.

diverts: In my sociology book that I was reading I came across the word diverts that I was unfamiliar with. I thought it meant being aggressive but when I researched the definition it meant a cause (someone or something) to change course or turn from one direction to another. The criminal justice system changed people away from it. It relates to life by changing someone's mind, for example, to vote for a candidate of some sort.

legitimate: Today while I was reading in the library I came across the word legitimate which I didn't know the meaning to. I thought it meant honesty, what it really meant was conforming to the laws or rules. It related to the text by being successful you must attain the rules without denying lower social classes. In life, it relates by following the laws for example, you can not use phones in school zones. If you comply on breaking this law there will be consequences.

array: In the article of Jolliffe and Harl, I was unfamiliar with the word array. I thought it meant a variety but as I did my research it learned that it meant an impressive display or range of a particular type of thing. It relates to what I read by the arrangement of surveys about high school and college students prepare for class. It can relate to life by having different choices of something to choose from.

scuttlebutt: As I was reading the article for Jolliffe and Harl I came across the word scuttlebutt that I was unfamiliar with. I didn't know what it meant so I researched for the definition and it means gossip or rumor. It relates to the reading by seeing if the rumor's about reading is true. By this, it relates to life by figuring out why it is that students' don't read as much for their academics.

matrices: Today as I was reading, there was a word I was unfamiliar with which was matrices. I didn't know what it meant at all so I checked on the dictionary online and it said it meant an environment or material in which something develops. Using methods of our choice was how it related to what I was reading. It relates to life by using matrices to study for our classes and prepare us for tests.

competent: In my text book that I was reading I came across the word competent. My thoughts about what it meant was understanding or good. What it really meant was having the necessarily ability, knowledge, or skill to do something successfully. It related to the text by being thoughtful on what and how we learn in our academic performance. In life, it can relate by having the competent for your career that you will have or in sports by having the skills to play.

aspirations: I came across the word aspirations as I was reading a book today. To me I thought it meant inspiring people but when searched for the definition it said it meant a hope or ambition of achieving something. We wouldn't feel the same about life or have the same hopes as we did for our future which is how it relates to what i read in the book. In life, it can relate by having goals, for example, graduation from college, getting married, etc.

Resurgence: Resurgence is a word I came across as I was reading in my Sociology book. I thought it meant a certain amount of people from what I had read but when I researched the word it said it meant increasing or reviving after a period of little activity, popularity, or occurrence. It related to the book by an occurrence of hate groups that a national policy would follow. A resurgence of people boycotting is an example of how it relates to life.

ethnomethodology: In my sociology book I came across a word called ethnomethodology. I thought it meant something dealing with the environment but as I read the definition it said it was the study of how people use commonsense understandings to make sense of life. It related to what I read by sociologists understanding the ways of peoples social location and skills. It related to life by learning how people learn from their society and that's it's not just from who they are but where they are from.

predicament: As I was watching a movie called, "The Blind Side," I didn't understand what the word predicament meant. I thought it meant what your views were but when I looked it up it meant, "A difficult, unpleasant, or embarrassing situation." It related to the movie by Mike being a situation which he didn't fully understand why he was in. It relates to life by how all people experience predicament as they grow up. It may be in an interview, having something embarrassing happen to you like tripping in public, etc.

mundane: I came across the word mundane that I was unfamilar with. I was reading through the article we are reading for class by Brandt. I thought mundane meant an object or materical of some sort. As I searched for the definition I learned that it meant pertaining to the world, universe or earth. It related from what I was reading by seeing how writing pertains to the world.

Arrogant: i was reading in a book called, "all i ever wanted was everything." I thought it had meant when your being mea but when i researched arrogant it meant overbearingly assuming. It related to what i read by janice was upset that her daughter was so furious that her daugther was so arrogant.

Gullible: my friend isaac was telling my cousin that she was really gullible. I asked him what it had meant and he said when you say something you believe it. I then knew how it related to why he called my cousin gullible because he was wasn't being serious about what he was saying and my cousin believed it.

Metacognitive knowledge: Today in class our instructor was lecturing about what we had read and he was going over it with us. He told us that metacognitive was the same thing as conditional knowledge. I didn't know what it meant and he told us it meant knowing when and why to use a particular strategy based on understanding the task and ourselves. I then saw how it related to the examples of knowledge he had gave us.

Vignette: As I was reading a my book I had no idea what this word had meant. I thought it meant it was a type of description of some sort describing something. It turned out I was right after I researched the definition. It means a brief evocative description, account or episode. It related to what I was reading by describing what people from other cultures do and how they dress.

Journal #2

Perceive: As I was reading my sociology book about three days ago I wasn't sure of what this word meant. I tried to figure out what it meant by just rereading the sentence over and over again but that didn't work. My thoughts were that it meant the same thing as receive since they have familiar sounds. I searched what it meant and perceive means to become aware or conscious of something. I found out that just because words might sound the same or rhyme they don't necessarily have the same meaning. Perceive relates to what I was reading by becoming aware of the communities surroundings and not let anything that can be damaging to them. I know that I always perceive in my classes and know what is going on at all times.

Journal #1

Axiom: It was an unfamiliar word I came across the other day. I thought Axiom was a word that meant a group of words having to deal with similarities. When I had researched the word I came across what it really meant. An axiom is a self-evident truth that doesn't require any proof. I discovered this word when I was assigned a reading by my professor to read about, "Choice Theory," by William Glasser. After I learned what axiom meant I could relate to it with the book. It relates by choosing who you want to be and how you control your own behavior. You make your own decisions for yourself and figure out who it is you want to become. No one else has control over you or tell you who you should become.
